We asked Matt a few questions:

What do you love most about the city/community where you live and serve? My neighborhood consists of a predominantly elderly population. I really enjoy this about my community because I enjoy being able to assist and serve them with anything they may need. It’s one effective way we can be the hands and feet of Jesus to those around us.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve seen while serving there? During one of our summers conducting Recess (Bible club), we had a young girl that seemed to really be enjoying her experience and became very involved. On the last day of the program, her mother came by and approached us. She let us know that she saw how happy her daughter was and heard how much she enjoyed her time. Since her daughter planted that seed, her mother became connected with the church, and has rededicated her life to Christ.

What do you love about God? One of the things that I am reminded of is who I am because of him. I often think about what kind of person I would be and where I would be without God. It’s a chilling thought. The trials and obstacles we all face in our day to day life would be grueling to try and overcome alone, it is exceptionally better to go through life with him.

What is one thing about you that might surprise people? By day, I have a full-time job as an engineer, which I love. Many engineers enjoy the independent work that the field calls for, but I have always been a people person. As much as I enjoy being an engineer, I’m so grateful to also be a Community Minister to have the opportunity to reach people and be able to fulfill both of the callings the Lord has led me to.

Tell us about your family. I am happily married to my beautiful wife, Donen. Together we have two charismatic boys, Ethan and Graysen (with an E, he’ll introduce himself that way) and two fur-children, Winston-a Golden Doodle and Thor-a 1.5 pound Yorkie.
